Noreaster Hosted by MHS and Sunday River a Success
Luba Lowery at the start of the Noreaster Slalom Race
Athletes from all over the country gathered at Sunday River last week for the first Noreaster NorAm hosted by Maine Handicapped Skiing and Sunday River Ski Resort. The event sanctioned by USSA and the International Paralympic Committee included a Super G, Giant Slalom and a Slalom. On March 20th 17 athletes started the Super G. Former MHS participant, Maggie Wauters won the women’s sitting class. While Elitsa Storey from the US Disabled Ski Team was the only competitor in the women’s standing class completed the one run race with an impressive time of 1:19.22. On the men’s side Tyler Walker and Brad Washburn won the men’s sitting and standing classes respectively.
Friday, March 21st became an unexpected day off, due to high winds, but competition continued on Saturday with both the Giant Slalom and Slalom races. Luba Lowery, former Gould Academy student and MHS participant won on the women’s sitting side, while Walker and Washburn finished first in the men’s sitting and standing classes. The day rolled on with the Slalom race won by Lowery in the women’s sitting class. Tyler Walker and Brad Washburn also won the Slalom race for the men's sitting and standing classes.
The event was a large success and would not have been possible without the wonderful events crew at Sunday River. Maine Handicapped Skiing would also like to thank all the volunteers that helped out before and during the Noreaster NorAm. THANK YOU!
