Maine Handicapped Skiing raises $288,555 in Pledges at Ski-A-Thon
The 23rd Annual Maine Handicapped Skiing Ski-A-Thon raised $288,555 in pledges on Saturday, March 29th at Sunday River Ski Resort and Sunday River Inn and Cross Country Center. The event brought over 700 participants and volunteers together to show support for Maine’s largest year round adaptive recreation program. MHS offers free lessons to over 250 children and adults with physical disabilities in alpine skiing, snowboarding, nordic skiing, snowshoeing, cycling, paddling and golf.
The Ski-A-Thon welcomes teams of skiers and riders from all over Maine and New England to a day of great skiing highlighted with fun races, obstacle courses, free massages, finishing with an evening banquet and live music. At this year Ski-A-Thon the awards banquet was kicked off with a slide show of the Maine Handicapped Skiing season, including shots from that day’s events. The 110% award was then presented to Sally Trenholm, long time volunteer, board member and supporter of MHS. Otten Team, this year’s top fundraising, raising $29,980 earned a ski and lodging packet for five at an eastern ski resort. Les Otten, team captain of Otten team, and one of the original visionaries of Maine Handicapped Skiing won the top individual fundraising prize raising $22,0750.
Lift tickets and trail passes for the event were donated by Sunday River Ski Resort, and the Sunday River Inn and Cross Country Center.
